Job Description

The Tooling Engineer champions the designing and building of innovative quality tools that produce customer specified parts and arrive on time to meet production schedules.

 

Overview of Position

Assist tooling and manufacturing engineers to address tooling needs via documentation, reverse engineering and CNC programming to improve product quality.

Responsibilities

  • The Tooling Engineer understands the needs of in-house fabrication departments and works in concert with the Manufacturing Engineers, tooling design houses, Toolmakers, and operators to develop cost effective tooling designs, improvements, and repairs.
  • Works closely with the Tool Room Supervisor to support the timely completion of tool changeovers, accurately diagnose tooling issues and repair needs, and prescribe preventative maintenance plans for tooling.
  • Creates tooling documentation by reverse engineering tooling using both manual measurements and 3D scanning, defining tooling components and/or jigs and fixtures required to be successful.
  • Supports the die making process (specification through production run at rate) to ensure it is flawlessly executed
  • Reviews current tooling and work to improve efficiency of processes
  • Participates in the corrective action process on quality issues related to tooling problems
  • Provides subject matter expertise for stamping department improvements in safety, quality, productivity, and cost reductions in a dynamic manufacturing facility
  • Tracks cost approval, PO, invoice to payment, including initial budget, ECR and cost modifications
  • Prepare specifications, RFQs, design approvals and run-offs for new dies as needed

Qualifications

  • An associate’s degree in industrial technology or Journeyman Tool and Die Maker plus significant industry experience will be considered in lieu of a four-year engineering degree
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in the metal fabrication industry with responsibility for tool design, tool fabrication, and/or tool maintenance in a high-mix manufacturing environment
  • Proficient in Solidworks or similar 3D modeling package
  • Familiarity with BobCAD-CAM, Esprit CAM or similar CNC programming software
  • Knowledge of surface modeling, surface continuity issues, laser scanning/reverse engineering and 3D printing/AM desirable
  • Knowledge of material properties, mechanics of materials and how these materials react when subjected to varying stamping conditions
  • Working knowledge of production and quality control procedures used in an ISO-Certified manufacturing environment
  • Strong mechanical, time management and analysis skills
  • Proficient in MS Office- Excel, Project, and Word
  • Corporate ERP system experience
  • Should have a positive and professional attitude
  • Capable of standing for extended periods of time
  • Able to lift up to 40 pounds for short periods of time
